Essay / Jewelry Analysis by Guy De Maupassant - 1056
Lantin knows a great truth that fake jewelry is real and precious, he seems to be reborn from despair and stands at the peak of his career rather than feeling inconsolable and sad about his wife's death. What an important and unexpected turning point! No sooner had his wife died than he was devastated by this terrible fact. His hair turns white in thirty days, testifying to his despair. Furthermore, there is a constant stream of tears on his face throughout the day, telling that he is tormented by inexpressible grief – always obsessing over everything related to his wife (par. 15). His whole behavior shows everyone how much he loves this woman and cannot forget her, which makes us praise their sincere love. However, when he realizes that the "fake" jewels, which become valuable, can bring him enormous wealth, he is eager to sell them all in exchange for money. Mr. Lantin argues with the jewelers over the calculated price and angrily insists on checking the books. The higher the calculated price, the louder his voice is (para. 62). The detailed description of the dispute over the estimated value reflects the inner activity of Mr. Lantin who is excited by the higher price, which means that his greed and vanity are growing. Furthermore, he disdains looking at casual cars, and desires to tell passers-by loud and clear that he has two hundred thousand francs (par. 68). Furthermore, he tells his superior that he has a fortune of three hundred thousand francs, but he tells others that he inherits four hundred francs.
