  • Essay / The importance of recycling for our health and our environment

Our world is reaching the point where we will be surrounded by waste. There are risks associated with excess waste that could have been recycled. Even though the government is not doing its best to put an end to these dangers, surprisingly it is the non-governmental organizations that are trying to make a difference. Studies and proven facts have been done on these issues, so people should take this into account and start recycling more. Recycling is a beneficial process that is not required globally as it should be because citizens are not informed about the process and what it can do. People who don't recycle don't know the dangers they cause everywhere. Old batteries contain toxic lead which causes health problems for Taiwanese people who throw away these batteries (Gay, 12 years old). Space is becoming a dumping ground due to excess spaceflight and radioactive reserves from nuclear reactors, which could enter our atmosphere and explode (Gay, 13). When companies run out of space to dump their toxic waste, they turn to poor countries because they lack strict safety regulations (Gay, 31). Landfills on Earth are not the only place where waste is deposited. The ocean is ravaged by plastic bags, soda can holders and large fishing nets, which harm dolphins, turtles, sea lions and others (Gay, 69). Military bases in the United States contain more hazardous waste and are responsible for soil and water contamination (Gay, 83). There are other risks because we throw away so much stuff that companies have to remake all of these products. Incinerators are places where waste is reduced to ashes and if we recycle it, it can disappear.
