The generic way of reading the poem is mainly controlled by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's use of spacing, as seen in lines 1 and 2 "constantly risking absurdity [...] and death" preceded by a large gap, “climbs on a rhyme” (7) and “above a sea of faces” (10), itself placed in sufficient spacing. Such line breaks evoke built-up feelings of anticipation, as the pages of the poem, which describe "danger", are accompanied by spaces between the lines, which...... middle of paper ... ...the elements of space reflect the substantial and unpredictable spacing in the poem. To finalize this pictorial explanation, several important colors were used for symbolic purposes. The color complex of dark blue, black, red, and light yellow each has a connotation primarily associated with light versus dark. Light yellow represents hope, enlightenment, aspects of knowledge sought by artists and dark blue represents peace, calm and stability, elements that were abandoned by artists in their search for fulfillment staff. The last element is red which is related to the color black where black represents failure, death and the dual nature of the red pigment in this case is a reflection of sacrifice and passion - acts that artists are obligated to to accomplish in their absurd search for beauty. , perfection and personal development.
