Essay / Analysis of my purchases from a consumerism point of view
I bought a pair of Vans because I really liked them and had wanted to buy them since I arrived here, because they are cheaper than in Portugal When I was buying the Vans, I felt quite excited because I had wanted them for a while. However, for some time after the purchase, I questioned whether I was necessary and worth it, doubting whether I had made the right choice. Say no to plagiarism. I bought it because I love sweets and out of curiosity. While eating, I felt in heaven and delighted. But when I was done and my stomach was full, I felt bad about the calories I had just eaten and the money I spent to be happy for 5 minutes and feel fat for another hour. Apple Battery Replacement – I paid for this service because my battery was broken as it only lasted 2 hours. I had to change it otherwise my phone was useless. I felt really outraged by this purchase because I think I shouldn't have to pay anything because I already paid a lot of money for the iPhone and Apple is responsible for making worthless batteries. They should have changed it for free. Sweater – I bought this sweater because it was very comfortable and I loved it. I felt good buying this sweater. It will be great when it gets cold. In summary, this week, with the purchases described above, I spent $145 in total. If we think deeply about whether the money was well spent, I might start with the fact that I bought the sweater because I love it, true. However, I only bought it because I saw it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it, because I wouldn't have seen it and wouldn't have thought I needed it. I don't need an extra sweater. And that’s exactly what consumerism is. We are enticed to spend money on things we don't need, but we think we do it because society makes us think so, because we don't have the exact same model or product . It is a never-ending, expanding, vicious cycle linked to an ever-increasing intensity of desires. Consumerism is a philosophy ingrained in every member of contemporary society who can afford it. One thing is to consume our natural resources wisely to improve our lives with the intention of preserving them. Another thing is how we consume these resources. Consuming them irresponsibly and wasting them is where consumerism comes to life. Consumption happens when we are hungry. Every human being is hungry. It's a natural trait. Consumerism is being greedy and gluttonous, it is buying simply because you can afford it, it is overconsuming and considering consumption as the central aspect of many people's daily lives. And that was me when I bought the sweater. Luckily, I figured out how I did it and will return the sweater next week. Finally, it is important to discuss the purchase with Apple. I think everyone, including me, is aware of the strategy of planned obsolescence followed by Apple. Apple designs and manufactures its products with a limited lifespan, so they no longer become functional, obsolete and out of fashion after a while. This shortening of product useful lives is a strategy to generate long-term sales volume by reducing the time between repeat purchases. Apple does this to gain profits and profits at the expense of its consumers' income, without taking into account..
