The play was written in 1953 about the Salem witch trials that took place in the late 1600s. Arthur did a careful job of researching the events that took place and was able to describe them in his own words. About 40 years later, a film was created of Arthur's play, directed by Nicholas Hytner. Although the two representations have some major characteristics of each other, there are also major differences. Miller and Hytner agreed on some things for The Crucible, they also disagreed on other things. For example, Miller does not portray Abigail Williams as the leader of the girl group, but rather as an equal. In Hytner's portrayal of Abby, he makes her the "head" of the group, and each girl does what she does.
