  • Essay / Hermes The God of Herpes - 630

The Greek god I chose was Hermes. I chose him because he was the god of many things that I found interesting, such as travel, commerce, and athletic competitions. The myth I chose to write about is “The Theft of Apollo’s Cattle.” In this myth, Hermes (who was just a toddler) steals Apollo's cattle and is caught. In this myth, I like how Hermes ends up helping Apollo and how they become friends. According to Ron Leadbetter's article "Hermes", Hermes was born in a cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. He is the son of Zeus, the ruler of the gods. His mother is Maia, daughter of Atlas. (Leadbetter, 1997). Hermes was Maia's only child, but he was only one of Zeus' many children. He was close to his half-brother, Apollo, after the cattle died. According to (source 2), the children of Hermes would be Pan, Hermaphroditus, Aderus and Autolycus. Hermes' role in society was to be the messenger and conductor of souls to the underworld since he was the fastest of all the gods with wings on his. sandals. Zeus really liked Hermes because Hermes helped him make difficult decisions. Hermes existed to be the messenger, as he was the only Olympian God allowed entry into the underworld, heaven, and earth. Hermes was very popular among the Greek spirits and gods for this reason and he enjoyed the popularity he got from it. He also possesses certain powers such as being immune to human diseases, super fast, and did not age once he became an adult. The three sites that have the myth “The Stealing of Apollo's Cattle” are Hemlock and Hawthorn (source 5) Classical Mythology The Little Rascal: Hermes (source 3) and Hermes the Cattle of Apollo (source 4). In All the Stories, Hermes takes out of his cradle a...... middle of paper ......s. In my opinion, I believe that the Hemlock and Hawthorn (source 5) version of the story is better than the others. I like this version better because of the length and details, like why Hermes went looking for cattle. For me (source 4) it was missing some essential parts of the story, you may not get as much knowledge as you would have gained from reading the other sources. In the version (Source 3) it is not stated where he hid the cows (in a cave), which is a big part of the story and why Apollo could not find the cattle. In “The Theft of Apollo’s Cattle” there were many similarities. and the differences between the three different websites. If you only read one of the stories, you may miss some key points in the myth, such as the old man who stalks Hermes or the lyre that is traded to Apollo for his cattle. I really liked this myth
