  • Essay / The importance of physical activity - 1219

Physical activity is undeniably beneficial for everyone. Not only does it keep you fit and healthy, but when started at a young age, it can establish good lifestyle habits. Sometimes though, people don't take care of their physical well-being, leading to obesity and other eating disorders that can harm their health. Obesity is the condition of being seriously overweight. It is now considered a global epidemic by the World Health Organization (2000) (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). Physical activity is important for children in the middle childhood age group, as a staggering number of children have become obese in recent decades and teachers play a role in preventing obesity by becoming a positive role model, teaching children about physical activity and the importance of nutrition and understanding how children develop and what their developmental needs are during these stages (McDevitt & Ormrod). Childhood obesity is a major concern because it can not only lead to social problems related to child bullying, but also lead to serious illnesses in adulthood, such as diabetes and heart disease (McDevitt and Ormrod, 2010) . It is because of these alarming facts and figures that it is even more important to instill the benefits of physical activity and eating habits in children. These include slow but steady increases in weight and height and the fine-tuning of gross motor skills which can then be used in more structured play activities.
