Essay / Different Types of Hawaiian Folklore - 1265
Hawaiian FolkloreWhen I think of Hawaii, the first thing that comes to mind are hula skirts, luaus, and tikis, but Hawaiian folklore has much more than that. As I researched Hawaiian folklore, I developed a deeper interest in Hawaiian culture. Hawaii has always been my go-to vacation spot, but now I feel like visiting Hawaii for all of its culture would be amazing. As a child, I watched many shows that portrayed Hawaiians as superstitious, story-telling people. While researching this assignment, I read so many folktales, legends, and superstitions; while taking this course, I also realized that all cultures have a lot of folklore. My Hispanic culture probably has as much folklore as any other culture. Researching Hawaiian folklore has given me so much information and like you said, it's too much to include in this article. The three main types of folklore that I enjoyed the most, which I will discuss below, are legends, music, and folk medicine. The first type of Hawaiian folklore I would like to discuss are legends. Well-known folklorist Sandy Schlosser gives her own version of many legends. One of the Hawaiian legends told by Schlosser that I found very interesting was the tale of the “King of the Sharks.” Schlosser's account of "The King of the Sharks" went something like this: One day the King of the Sharks saw a beautiful human woman on the shore and fell in love with her. He then transformed into human form in order to approach the village girl. He dressed as a chief using the traditional feather cape. The people of the village were delighted to see a chief visit their village. They had a feast and the shark king decided to ask the human girl to marry him....... middle of paper ......r education on healing and medicine. Once a person was sick and ready to see a practitioner, they would go to one of the specified healing locations. The Hawaiians believed that the mind and body were synchronized, meaning that both parts of a human being needed to be treated in order to be fully healed. Once a sick person arrived at the places of healing, he would perform a large number of prayers to cleanse the body and mind of anything negative before beginning any type of medicinal practice. These types of treatments still take place today at centers like the Hawaiian Health Care Center (Native Hawaiian Healing). Personally, I strongly believe in education and so do Hawaiians. This quality of traditional Hawaiian medicine is something to be respected, as they place great importance on education. In some ancient cultures there is no respect for education.
