As technology advances and people study online, using proper netiquette becomes essential. There are certain rules you should follow when sending emails or posting to an online class forum. No one likes to be criticized or embarrassed in an email or online forum. The positive and negative effects experienced in an online forum can have a significant impact on how that person responds to future discussions or emails. By following the basic rules of netiquette outlined by Virginia Shea, one can avoid things like flare-ups and have an enjoyable online experience. Netiquette is the proper use of etiquette that should be used in emails and online class forums. It is essential that staff become more proficient in online netiquette as more attend college online rather than in an actual classroom. Good netiquette can make the difference in online learning for some people. Choosing not to use proper netiquette in an online class may result in class disruption, dismissal from the class, or dismissal from the college. The same also applies to writing and composing emails to a colleague, teacher, or simply someone you met on an online forum. According to the book Netiquette by Virginia Shea, there are ten fundamental rules of netiquette (Shea, 1994). These basic rules should be followed when posting in an online class or sending an email to others.
