He stood up to abolish slavery by telling the president and others the story of how America won its freedom. He mentions how Americans were “treated with sovereign indifference, coldness and contempt.” Yet they persevered. They were not men to look back” (Douglass). Americans wanted change, just as African Americans wanted fairness. Without this rebellion, slaves would not be able to emancipate themselves and stop being treated like animals. The white man's and black man's civil societies were opposed, which was surprising since the common white man's religious values were Christianity. They did not follow the law of the Lord; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Being a slave meant doing anything, whenever the master said so, otherwise “cast the devil out of them” (Cartwright) was implemented. From a partisan's perspective, if the slave owner "treated them kindly, well fed and clothed, with little fuel" (Cartwright), then they were good slave owners and they would not try to escape. Overall, this notion has morphed into what we call racial prejudice. Distinguishing someone because of the color of their skin is intolerance. Slave owners did not attempt to consider the damage they were causing to African Americans of that era, with the physical consequences,
