Essay / Nazi Medical Experiments - 919
During the Holocaust, the Nazis conducted medical experiments on what they believed to be inferior individuals. The experiments were cruel and took no account of the subjects' quality of life. Regardless of the cruelty, the medical community has gained knowledge that it could not have acquired within the strict ethical guidelines of the profession. Experiments are divided into three categories: racial, war-related, and pharmaceutical. The racing experiences were the worst of all categories. They had no medical reason to sterilize a breed, but their goal was to find a means of sterilization that could affect millions of people with little time and effort. In the experiments, they used different types of sterilization: x-ray, surgical, chemical and injection. The X-ray experiment was carried out by shooting X-rays at an individual's reproductive organs two to three times a week, and then the subjects were returned to work regardless of the burns and pain caused by the radiation. Another method involved a woman inserting chemicals into her reproductive organs. The chemical was an irritant that would cause severe inflammation and eventually cause the fallopian tubes to close. In all experiments, surgical castrations have been proven to be the most reliable and effective over time. Josef Mengele was chief physician at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He conducted experiments on children and people with physical and/or mental abnormalities to prove the superiority of the Nordic race. He began using twins in his experiments. Mengele wanted to understand how identical twins were created and what was so different about them. His experiments involved using one twin as a control and the other as a variable. He expired... middle of paper ......ed in Russia and was sentenced to 25 years. The verdict of the trial was that seven were sentenced to death, nine to long prison terms and seven were acquitted. The judges also found that basic principles must be observed during any type of medical experiment. The experimentation carried out in the concentration camps was horrific and without concern or value for human life. More than 70 different medical research experiments were conducted, involving more than 7,000 prisoners and 200 doctors. Of the experiments conducted, some relevant data survived and proved useful in processing and training other life-saving experiments. Perhaps the greatest lasting memory of the Holocaust is that people are now more aware of the segregation that exists and are more likely to defend any race, nationality, or geographic location that is treated without regard..
