Essay / How did Art Nouveau influence art and design in...
Art Nouveau (literally "new art" in French) was a popular international art style, developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and reaching its peak. between 1890 and 1910. The primary aim of this movement was to break free from the constraints that had traditionally been placed on artists and to completely revolutionize design – a goal which, without doubt, was achieved. Evidence of this can be seen in the work of several prominent designers of the time – such as artist Alphonse Mucha and architect Antoni Gaudi – and even in other movements – the Arts and Crafts movement being a prime example. How these figures and this movement were influenced by Art Nouveau in particular will be explored in this essay. Art Nouveau is considered a "total" artistic style because it encompasses and can be applied to all areas of art, including architecture, interior design, decorative arts, and fine arts. Art Nouveau pieces are quite avant-garde in appearance, using irregular shapes, intricate patterns and stained glass to break away from the fixed historical style that was, at the time, considered the norm. The style is also largely characterized by its unique combination of lines, subjects and materials. The line is, most often, seen as elongated, graceful and sinuous, with angular lines rarely used. Another type of line often used is the "whiplash" curve, which changes direction quite violently. Much of the motifs used in Art Nouveau architecture were also inspired by nature: vines, leaves, grass, flowers and any other organic images. In fact, much of the flowing lines shown are used in an attempt to imitate the natural flowing lines found in na...... middle of paper ...... ional styles and instead use shapes new and organic that emphasizes humanity. connection with nature. It was therefore very strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau style which was then gaining popularity. The combination of these two important movements helped revolutionize interior design for the better, as it saw a gradual increase in the quality and creativity of decorative arts. From these case studies, it becomes evident that Art Nouveau was perhaps the greatest influence on art and design in the late 19th century. Although the movement was later superseded by the modernist styles of the 20th century, it is nonetheless recognized today as an important stepping stone between the fixed traditional artistic style of the time and the later modernist approach to art, opening up new new paths and endless possibilities for artists and architects. and the creators.
