Essay / Professional salary cap - 2549
Pro Salary Cap According to Dan Oleary, "Since baseball is the only major sport without a salary cap, and with the way big-spending baseball teams spend money, it seems like having a different winner every year defy logic” (OLeary). A salary cap is imposed in every professional sports franchise, excluding Major League Baseball. Without a salary cap, a club can dominate its competition on money alone. The New York Yankees spend the most money each year on their players (Goldman). It is no coincidence that they have won the most World Series of any other club in baseball history (Wikipedia-World Series). Not only have they won the most world championships, but they are also consistent contenders for the American League title year after year. If a salary cap is not set in professional baseball soon, many fans will begin to lose interest in the sport due to repetitive results. The money saved from salary caps could be used more effectively for other purposes aimed at better stimulating the economy, such as government. More money is spent on Major League Baseball players than on all other professional sports franchises (Bryant). All the money spent isn't just intended to benefit ridiculously rich athletes. The result of spending too much money has a negative effect on baseball fans. Prices for tickets, concessions, souvenirs, etc. are subject to change. is skyrocketing because of ridiculously overpaid athletes. Before the sport is damaged beyond repair, a salary cap must be immediately imposed in Major League Baseball. Many people have introduced the idea of a salary cap system to Major League Baseball over the years, but have all been denied, or somewhat ignored.
