    In this novel, magic, such as charms or spells, is mentioned everywhere. The most obvious instance of magic, however, is the dragon's spell on Grendel and Hrothgar. The Dragon gives Grendel the invincibility of Hrothgar's men's weapons. Hrothgar, on the other hand, benefits from invulnerability against Grendel. Although magic helps reinforce Grendel's romantic image, it is also what makes Grendel an anti-hero. Before the spell, Grendel did not intentionally go out to attack human beings.
