Essay / Smoking Health Behavior Handout - 1130
The health behavior I wanted to improve this semester is quitting smoking. I had my first cigarette when I was eighteen and unfortunately, I wasn't able to put one down until I took this course. In my country, many people smoked cigarettes and I didn't think there was anything wrong with smoking or that smoking caused harm to your body. In my country, we don't advertise cigarettes as harmful like they do in the United States. When I moved here, I noticed a lot of anti-smoking advertising. In advertisements on billboards and in television spots, we saw women and men who had been affected by smoking. An advertisement showed a woman who had no toes because of smoking and a man who had no legs because of smoking. One person died but had never smoked. One day in her life, she died from second-hand smoke. After watching this it scared me and it made me think about my smoking and it made me want to try to quit smoking. When I saw my friends smoking and while I was smoking, I thought about those people in the commercials and how easily my friends could become like those people in the commercials. I was afraid that a smoking-related illness would catch up with me before then. I found a way to quit smoking. I have been smoking for three years now and have already noticed the effects it has on the health of my body. I started to notice that my teeth were yellowing and my gums were in bad shape. I hated the smoker's cough and the shortness of breath I developed. I don't want to develop any other health side effects from my smoking. I want to improve my life and live a long and happy life without smoking. I don't want to get addicted to cigarettes anymore. This is why health behavior...... middle of paper ...... the goal; live a long and happy life without smoking. In conclusion, the health behavior I wanted to improve this semester is quitting smoking. Once I quit, I will no longer be afraid that a smoking-related illness will catch up with me before I find a way to quit. I will no longer have to worry about negative health effects on my body. I will improve my life and live a long and happy life without smoking. I will no longer be addicted to cigarettes. As long as I follow the goals I set for myself and get the support of my friends and family, I will finally be able to smoke my last cigarette and I will finally be able to say that I no longer smoke. I will also be able to save more money that can be put toward my college fund here at WKU. This is why the health behavior I wanted to improve this semester is to quit smoking for good...
