In Moving Beyond Pain: A Book for and About Adults Abused as Children, Dr. Eliana Gil discusses the causes and effects of traumatic experiences that adults have mistreated. as children suffered during their childhood. Throughout the book, Dr. Gil presents various types of abuse within the family, such as emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Additionally, Dr. Gil explains how to guide these formerly abused adults to understand and cope with each situation. Currently, many children suffer from emotional, physical and sexual abuse in their families. Psychological abuse is the lack of interest or affection of parents towards their children. Emotional abuse makes children feel worthless and unloved. Physical abuse refers to attacking children resulting in visible bodily injury from being burned, pushed, hit, slapped or whipped. Sometimes physical abuse can be extremely serious, leading to broken bones, broken bones, or bleeding. Sexual abuse occurs when someone forces, deceives, or threatens children into sexual contact. These acts of abuse could prevent children from living a normal adult life. In order to cope with such a traumatic childhood, adults who were abused as children should get rid of these heavy and painful memories. Adults who were abused as children must confront the abuse they suffered. To cope and admit that they have been abused, adults should no longer live in denial. As children, they were constantly in denial because they did not realize that they were being mistreated by the people they loved and trusted. This helped me understand why adults who were abused as children act the way they do when it comes to social interaction. Personally, I gained new information that I didn't know existed. Initially, I always believed that child abuse only involved physical or sexual abuse. I didn't know that psychological abuse really existed. I didn't know that emotional abuse seriously affects children as they grow up. This book can open the minds of those who are unaware or refuse to believe that child abuse occurs daily in our society, as it is both very informative and compelling.
