Not only is there now a religion that challenges that of the Igbo people, but there is even a basic government system being put in place to try to govern and regulate these villages. As Okonkwo was absent from Umuofia during this globalization and colonization, he is much less likely to be influenced by this powerful new culture. He can see that his village is very different from when he left, but he is one of the only people upset by this. This is demonstrated at the beginning of chapter twenty-one, as Achebe writes: “There were many men and women in Umuofia who were not as convinced as Okonkwo was of the new dispensation. The white man had indeed brought a crazy religion, but he had also brought a trading store…and a lot of money was flowing into Umuofia” (Achebe 178). Today, there are not only cultural changes in Umuofia, but also economic globalization (Steger). And the Igbo people, as a whole, do not seem entirely uncomfortable with these
