    Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness has been the cause of racial debates over whether it should be read today. Conrad's portrayal of African Americans troubles many critics, particularly Achebe. Achebe disagrees with Conrad's novel because Conrad dehumanizes the African and Achebe does not let anyone diminish his humanity. In the first pages of his article, Achebe compares Conrad as being "no more a great artist than anyone who can be called a priest who reads mass backwards or a doctor who poisons his patients" (Achebe 9). . This sentence shows how much he disagrees with Conrad. Despite the fact that Conrad lived in a time when Africans did not have the best image; Achebe believes that there is no excuse for writing about Africa as he did. I agree with Achebe, this is not exceptional and does not justify his racist remarks. Achebe takes offense to Conrad's novel and calls it racist.
