For my research, I chose to explore discussions regarding the different ways children are affected by their parents' divorce. Divorce is a difficult time for all parties involved, but many people are unaware of the extent of the problems it can cause for those not directly involved: the children. Additionally, many of the negative effects of divorce may, in fact, persist and extend over the long term. Most parents realize that their separation has detrimental effects on their children, but adults are generally unaware of how their children may be affected throughout their lives. After extensive research in the area, the topics that I found to be the most informative and compelling include: how divorce can affect separated children in different ways, the dynamics that are responsible for variations in effects on children and how adults who have experienced divorce like children are affected in the long term. These subtopics of the field are important because of their specific focus and unique approaches. My intention is to build on them by adding an additional element of primary prevention in hopes of ensuring ideal well-being for the children involved. This topic and its research is very important because it concerns a very wide range of people. According to one online statistical source, in the United States alone, there is a divorce approximately every 36 seconds. That's nearly 2,400 divorces per day, 16,800 divorces per week, and 876,000 divorces per year ("Thirty-Two Shocking Divorce Statistics" par. 4).
