At the beginning of the year, students engage in an honest discussion about their educational careers to date. They reflect on some of the most beneficial classes they've participated in, then dig deeper to determine what made that class successful. They also work to determine how their actions or those of others may have led to a less beneficial classroom environment. This allows students to reflect on their personal behavior without having to admit wrongdoing or assign any culpability. My methods make students more confident in their role and their place within our class. Students are also responsible for determining all of the rules and regulations they will follow throughout the year, which also helps them understand working together. By adhering to certain views of the philosophy of pragmatism, my students can set a standard not only for their own behavior, but they are also introduced to the concept that their education is not only their right, but also their right.
