Essay / Understanding and Overcoming Low Self-Esteem - 1085
I asked a colleague of mine named CJ for his views on low self-esteem in men. Although there have been some biased opinions that a limited part of men's sense of self-worth is linked to activities, results and material success. He said his insecurities may lie in his appearance and his dominance as a man. He said he tries to cover up some of his insecurities with positive traits about himself. For example, he thinks he is not a very attractive man, so he would dress nice or smell nice to attract women. He states that his personality is one of his best qualities. CJ also thinks that men aren't supposed to have low self-esteem. In fact, we never talk about their self-esteem. We expect so much from men. They are our providers and our protectors. “We don't need to check our self-esteem because we define it ourselves” (CJ). According to Malcolm Tatum “You know they do it, but how do men hide low self-esteem? It's no secret that men hide their low self-esteem from friends, family, and almost everyone else they come into contact with. Part of the motivation to prevent any feelings of self-doubt from being apparent to others comes from what society considers appropriate behavior to be considered masculine or manly. For this reason, men will go to great lengths to hide their low self-esteem, sometimes even in front of their eyes..
