Essay / No Tolerance for Intolerance: Westboro Baptist Church various events. However, the controversy does not come from the right to free speech, but from what they say verbally and in writing on their signs during the protests. This church has been labeled a hate group rather than a religious organization, particularly due to the fact that the WBC is not actually affiliated with any larger religious denomination (Burke). One of America's most notorious hate groups, the Ku Klux Klan, has even gone on record as saying how horrible the group is, even going so far as to counter-protest at their protests ("KKK vs. WBC"). Westboro Baptist Church will hold a protest at almost any location at any time, including funerals, parades and public events, football games, Comic Cons, concerts and at schools . Who is this group protesting against? This is not a simple question to answer since they don't like anyone from the lesbian, bisexual, gay, crossdressing community or anyone who supports that community, as well as soldiers in the US Army or people who support our troops. The WBC is a prime example of intolerance, as they are intolerant of anyone who does not have the exact same beliefs as them. Fred Phelps is the man who founded the WBC in 1955 in Topeka, Kansas, said to have been founded on primitive Baptist beliefs and extreme Calvinism. Phelps had decided to attend the West Point Military Academy until he attended a Methodist revival, which he said inspired him to enter the ministry.
