Leora Tanenbaum's book, Slut! imposes the argument of the injustice and narrow-mindedness of the sexual double standard between teenagers and what leads them to call others sluts. Throughout the book, the author discloses many different studies and stories to help readers understand the underlying cause and problem of the slut name and how it affects different girls and women across the country.1. Girls are beaten up because they deviate from the American ideal of femininity.2. Girls and women who are sexually active are ashamed of it due to the sexual double standards presented in our society.3. Slut bashing can have a positive or negative impact on a girl; it strengthens some girls by giving them a sense of perspective while others break down and become self-destructive.4. The difference between girls and women is not whether they are intelligent or interesting; it's about knowing whether you are a "good" girl or a "bad" girl.5. Women are dehumanized and viewed as sexual objects because their worth is measured in sexual terms; thus creating the concept of slut.6. Girls are expected to be sexual by pleasing the men around them; while not being sexual to please men and those around them.7. By lowering the reputation of other girls, girls also lower their self-esteem. The slut label is the most powerful tool used to shame another girl. It is said that “two in five girls nationwide – 42% – have had sexual rumors about them.” (Pg. xiv) This shows that dominant groups use power through their knowledge that girls must have a specific attitude and behavior. Men use slut bashing to keep sexuality in check while women use slut bashing to undermine other women. Either or, the power to do so governs many actions people perform. So to speak, knowledge can make or break a person. This can act as a benefit, for power, or as a loss, for ignorance. “Don’t take what you know for granted.
