  • Essay / Station Fire - 1435

SynopsisIn West Warwick Rhode Island, on February 20, 2003, during the performance of the band Great White, a fire broke out which ultimately claimed the lives of 100 people and injured 200 others. The tour director arranged and lit pyrotechnic props, large fireworks displays designed to display a shower of sparks. The sparks ignited the soundproofing foam near the stage. The fire spread quickly. Most were killed either in the crush to exit the building or overwhelmed by smoke as they tried to find an exit. The immediate cause has been well documented through witness accounts and a videotape taken during the concert. In the period following the tragedy, many attempts were made to shift blame. Following a Grand Jury investigation, several of the parties involved pled guilty to violations of the law and have served or are currently serving prison sentences. The StationThe Station was a single-story wood frame building of approximately 4,500 square feet. It was built in 1946 as a club for local military personnel on leave. Over the years it has served as a restaurant, bar and nightclub. In 1972 a fire damaged the building and it reopened in 1974. In 1991 it was transformed into its latest incarnation as a bar and showroom. The building was laid out with the bar, kitchen, darts room and offices and storage at the east end of the building. The exhibition hall and veranda comprised the west. There were four exits. The front door was only accessible through a hallway partially obstructed by a small ticket window and another 36-inch-wide door in the middle of the hallway. This becomes a critical choke point when the fire breaks out.For fire protection, the station had a local fire alarm system...... middle of paper ......007/ 11/rhode-island-st.htmlSound and Video Online Entrepreneurhttp://svconline.com/mag/avinstall_safe_sound/ABC newshttp://abc.comWikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fireProvidence Journalhttp://www .projo.com/extra/2003/stationfire/ National Fire Protection Association http://www.nfpa.org/itemDetail.asp?categoryID=633&itemID=21073&URL=Research%20&%20Reports/Safety%20fact%20sheets/Saf&cookie%5Ftest= 1Rhode Island State Attorney General's Officehttp://www. .riag.ri.gov/misc/station.php-Witness Statements-Grand Jury Testimony-West Warwick DocumentsThe Boston Globehttp://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/02/02/tentative_deal_set_in_ri_fire_case /Transcript of Newspaper interview with Attorney General Lynchhttp://www.projo.com/extra/2003/stationfire/content/projo-20060922-lynchinterview.6fd21d2.html
