You've all heard of Martin Luther King JR, but have you heard of his wife, Coretta Scott King? Well, now you will. Coretta Scott King may not have been as famous as her husband, but she was just as important. Coretta Scott King was born 12 miles away in Marion, Alabama, on April 27, 1927. Her father, Obadiah Scott, was a diligent farmer. He also used his own truck to haul logs for a sawmill, making local whites angry and jealous that he actually owned a truck and was quite successful. They threatened him and the whole family was afraid that one day he would not come back from work. It was just a problem. Coretta and her siblings also had to walk 3 miles to school each morning. Black children had to get ice cream last. And they were constantly taunted and threatened. These are just a few examples of the racism and discrimination Coretta faced growing up. After finishing elementary school, Coretta and her sister Edythe attended Lincoln High School, then went to Antioch College, where Coretta earned a bachelor's degree in art....
