    People of different faiths, including Christians and Jews, could live freely under Islamic rule, but the same could not be said in the world where persecution was widespread. No one was forced into slavery and they could live and work as they pleased, there was no need to fear being treated as inferiors. The abolition of slavery was a very new concept at that time and one that would not become widespread for many years. A good example of this would be America, where slavery was widespread until fairly recently. Islamic civilizations, following the guidelines presented in Islam, have worked from the beginning to make their societies a safe haven for all. Islam is a religion of peace for all, and Islamic civilizations have established rules that have helped achieve this goal. Although no civilization is free from flaws, Muslims aimed to provide equitable rights to non-Muslim members of their societies, just as the U.S. Constitution does today. Islam as a religion aims to be simple and clear. The teachings of the Quran, the Islamic holy book and the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) have played an important role in Islamic civilizations. One of the main philosophies is to treat others as one wishes to be treated, and it is with this in mind that leaders have been able to govern with an impartial and open mind.
