  • Essay / A Reflection on Service Learning: Working at Easter...

Monads Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” » Before this experience, I did not understand this quote; however, now I completely understand this. The first time I heard about service learning at Saint Anselm College was when I took a tour during my junior year of high school. As the tour guide explained what service learning was, it immediately piqued my interest. As a student, I learn better in a more hands-on environment and this experience seemed perfect to me. After arriving at Saint Anselm College and being asked to participate in the service, I really knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience, and over the course of my twenty hours, I feel like a better, more mature young adult. The Easter Seals agency I served provided excellent service to children and families. I think the program is very special and provides so many children and families with benefits and opportunities they may never have had. Children receive breakfast upon arrival and are fed throughout the day. Additionally, there are frequent coat and other drives so parents can bring warm clothes for their children. The employees are very kind and care a lot about the children. The whole agency is very positive and I am grateful to have been able to be a part of such a great program. The goal of Easter Seals Daycare is to support children from low-income families and provide them with meals and a warm place to play and learn. They educate children who might not have been able to attend a public school and receive a proper education. The center also offers daycare for babies and toddlers...... middle of paper ......classroom and reading: "Miss Laina! I missed you!" I will miss the weekly chats with Owen and reading the same book to Jaclyn every week. I will miss each of the children I met. They taught me so much and I am truly blessed to having volunteered with such amazing kids I would absolutely do this again and plan to continue service learning next semester in the same class. I think service learning is a unique opportunity. and amazing and the only suggestion I would have, based on my experience, would be to meet the teacher in charge of the class you're volunteering in, just so people have a better understanding of their tasks and. what needs to be done However, overall I will never forget this life changing experience and I already miss all the kids so much that I can't wait for the next semester...
