    When I retired three years ago from the United States Air Force as a production superintendent with 25 years of service, I I was an expert in my field. During my technical studies, I dedicated time in class and studying books and lectures to learn as much as possible. During the hands-on experience, I observed and reproduced what the instructors taught and asked questions when I didn't understand. It was when I started working on airplanes and moving up the ranks that the real learning began. I learned through experience. As I gained experience, I became an expert. Experiential learning is a lifelong learning process marked by success and failure. Reflective thinking is one of the best learning tools that can be used with life experiences. As I begin to learn and progress in my second career, reflection will be an important tool that I use in what I hope to become; an expert nurse.
