When you think of American history, do you think of war, slavery, or segregation? What they have in common is gender equality. Gender equality is an issue that has concerned America since the first day it was inhabited. This is a problem in America. A more particular period would be World War II. During this time, women were used to do men's work and tasks, but they were still expected to look feminine. While most men were at war, women found jobs playing baseball and working in factories making the items needed for war and daily life. During World War II, women were forced to work. Government statistics prove this: in December 1941, the government conscripted single women aged 20 to 30 as auxiliaries in the armed forces, civil defense or war industries... Government figures show that women's employment has increased increased during World War II, from about 5.1 million in 1939 (26%) to just over 7.25 million in 1943 (36% of all working-age women). Forty-six percent of all women aged 14 to 59 and 90% of all able-bodied single women aged 18 to 40 were engaged in some form of work or national service in September 1943. (Anitha) A woman The workplace was common, but they did not receive the salary they deserved. Often a woman's work was the same as the previous man's, but they performed these jobs for 53% of the man's salary. (Tolman) Eventually, many women and men went on strike to demand equal pay.
