  • Essay / Establish laws against cyberbullying - 787

“I don't know why everyone hates me so much. But maybe yes because now I hate myself too. Right now, I don't see the point in trying, speaking or breathing. I’m just done” (“Cyberbullying”). Scary words, right? These few sentences from the movie Cyberbully could be someone's last words. Cyberbullying is the inappropriate use of electronic communication to intimidate someone through text messages, rumors, photos, fake profiles, etc. on social networking sites. Cyberbullying should have specific laws against it. If all abuse is illegal and against the law, why isn't cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is equivalent to the effects of traditional bullying because it causes pain, whether emotional or physical. This nation can decide many punishments to give to the bully. Cyberbullying should be considered a criminal offense because it can potentially lead to injustice for those being bullied, emotional and psychological suffering and, worst of all, self-harm or suicide. Initially, some people will argue that justice is not necessarily necessary for people who are victims of cyberbullying because "if just being a jerk were a criminal offense, [then] we would need a lot more prisons than the hundreds we already have” (Butler 1). However, if action is not taken to stop cyberbullying, injustice towards those who are victims of cyberbullying will continue to grow. The Pledge of Allegiance specifically mentions “liberty and justice for all,” but not justice for individuals who are victims of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying isn't just about "being a jerk," because if it were, many teens wouldn't be depressed, drop out of school, use drugs, or harm themselves. To provide justice for the victims, prisons are not necessary for the perpetrators. Society can find itself in the middle of a paper... a full life, far from itself. This is a very important problem and it must be recognized. This nation has reached a point where it is absolutely necessary to pass laws against cyberbullying because we cannot just let young people give up on life. Overall, cyberbullying is a dangerous and growing problem that needs to be brought under control. Cyberbullying is a serious topic worldwide that must be addressed because it causes mental suffering, suicide risks and unequal justice among the many victims. Distinguished laws are needed to combat this practice, as it is harmful to society. This makes the Internet a dangerous environment for young people. Cyberbullying is a problem that can be solved in the future, and people should support movements against it. Technology is one of the greatest advances in the world, but it is unacceptable to wrongly take advantage of it to cause pain to others..
