Essay / Imperialism and Colonialism in Shakespeare's The Tempest
The Tempest was Shakespeare's last play written shortly after England's colonization of Virginia in 1609. Throughout the play there are numerous different references to imperialism and colonialism in the characters. The Tempest analyzes the imperialist relations between England and America but applies it to the personal human interactions between the central characters. The island gives newcomers a feeling of endless possibilities, such as claiming the land for themselves due to the belief in the Great Chain of Being and the 17th century being a time of exploration. The idea of ruling a colony led many people to believe that it was possible to exert this type of power over a large group of people. Master-servant relationships are central to many scenes in the play. Almost every scene consists of one person in possession of power and authority while another person is subject to that power. For example, Caliban represents the indigenous cultures suppressed by European societies, of which Prospero is a symbol. It was also a time when a hierarchical world was achievable through colonization, imperialism and slavery. The Great Chain of Being was an idea that not all humans and other creatures were created equally. For example, the father is head of the family; below him, his wife; below her, their children. This idea can be attributed to the widely accepted mindset at the time, where a master-servant relationship was common and some people were inferior to others due to their social status, wealth and wealth. their power. These ideas have led some people to believe that it is morally right to use others below them to achieve success and prosperity. The Tempest can also be seen as a critique of imperialism represented by the different situations that I...... middle of paper. ....perhaps then one might ask whether Prospero's change of action can be justified. But this may not be entirely true if we look at history before the Storm. We know that Caliban was born to a witch and an incubus which is defined as an evil or ungodly male creature who has sex with women in their sleep. He was therefore not conceived out of love but out of lust which can be interpreted as sin. This automatically places him below Prospero who was born into noble status; he was born to lead Milan. Partly due to Caliban's upbringing and knowing that he attempted to rape Miranda, he can be characterized as someone who is motivated by pleasure. Prospero, on the other hand, is motivated by intellect. He tries to do what he thinks is right to maintain his position of power. He must think more and plan his decisions to manipulate situations and people..
