  • Essay / The Cure for Breast Cancer - 1598

Researchers and doctors have been trying to find the perfect cure for breast cancer for many years, but with each passing year, new symptoms and problems seem to arise . Breast cancer appears to be more common in women, but there have been cases where the cancer has affected men. Years of research have gone into trying to find the final answer to all the damage caused by cancer and on top of that, many organizations have been collecting data and carrying out research in the hopes of one day curing this horrible disease. One of the major organizations helping to calculate breast cancer research data and contributing to a proven cure is the (SEER) or Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program of the National Cancer Institute (Yancik, et al., 1989). This organization deals primarily with the treatment of older people, because as a patient ages, it is more difficult to identify illnesses that might occur while the patient is already diagnosed with another illness. SEER mainly tracks disease stage, surgery, histological type and survival time (Yancik et al., 1989). The goal is to help women catch cancer early and prevent any further damage that may occur due to the disease. It is a known fact that as you get older you tend to have more health problems and to keep your body in good shape you need to have tests to ensure that everything in your body is working properly. The majority of patients diagnosed with breast cancer are 65 years or older, providing evidence that older people are more likely to be infected with breast cancer than younger people in the United States (Yancik et al., 1989). Women in their 60s tended to... middle of article...... risk of cancer recurrence by 50%, plus it reduced cancer deaths by 20% (Darby, et al. al., 2011). There are two different types of radiotherapy. External radiation uses devices located outside the body to send radiation to the infected area and is normally performed daily for 5 to 6 weeks (Whelen, et al., 2010). Internal radiation uses radioactive substances found in needles, wires, and/or catheters that are then placed near the cancerous area. It seems that internal radiation is more effective because the substances are placed right next to where the cancer is, but external radiation seems less complicated because everything is done outside the body rather than inside. interior. The average internal radiation therapy appears to take much less time because the average treatment is only given for 5 days (Shaitelman, et al.., 2010).
