The fifteen-year battle over Terri Schiavo's life dominated popular culture from the early 1990s until her death in 2005. The heated trials who were to decide the fate of this woman caused a deep rift between her husband Michael Schiavo and his family, the Schindlers. This decade-and-a-half-long crusade was propagated by the intuitive Christian minds of the Schindlers and their followers, as they presented no evidence to support their claim that Terri lived in a broken body aside from anecdotal information. They fell victim to confirmation bias as they searched for any glimmer of hope that their daughter was still alive, buried beneath her own shell of a body, screaming to come out. In the following pages, anecdotal information will be presented and explained while showing how critical analysis methods should have been applied to ensure the same conclusion reached by the judges but in a more rapid process. To begin, a general overview of the case will be given, followed by the presentation of anecdotal evidence such as the video recordings that "proved" that Terri was not in a persistent vegetative state (PVS), building the argument by Schindler based on fundamental Christian principles. beliefs and other pattern-seeking behaviors that have been used to vilify Mr. Schiavo as well as to justify much of the observational evidence used to determine causal relationships.
