  • Essay / Adding technology to Huntsville classrooms...

Recently, the Huntsville Independent School District Board of Education decided it would be a great idea to move into the 21st century and add technology in classrooms. School board members read articles like “Why Integrate Technology into the Curriculum?” : There are Many Reasons", which explain why it would be a great idea to add technology into the classroom as well as articles like "In the Classroom of the Future, Stagnant Scores", which talks about all the new ways to learn with to technology. The only thing these two articles as well as any article you find both for and against technology in the classroom say that when moving from traditional teaching to this new method, a large amount of planning must take place, unfortunately, I believe the Huntsville Independent School District decided to ignore the part about the need for proper planning. This lack of planning resulted in a lot of wasted class time, as shown in the chart above titled “Amount of Class Time.” Looking at the other chart above, you can see that 42% of class time is spent teaching. Many think this is a good amount of time and nothing is taken away from the students. As you can see in the other chart above titled "Use of Teaching Time", of that 42%, only about half of that time is spent teaching the day's lesson. Unfortunately, the school district cannot go back, plan properly; this is why I propose that the school district implement a training program for teachers to learn how to use the technology they have been given, as well as how to repair the technology when it is not working properly. Huntsville High School has incredible computer technology. program with students...... middle of paper ......horrible cold only to walk in first period and do nothing for the first twenty minutes because the teachers can't use their technology? During my time as a student at HHS, I experienced the above statement firsthand, and it sucks to feel like you've been run over by an army tank and go when even at school to waste your time. I know that teachers not knowing how to use their technology can result in wasting five minutes or even half of class time. With just a little training and a small amount of money, teachers will know what they are doing with this new technology. It's too late to turn back the clock and properly integrate technology into the classroom, but we can solve the problem, so let's solve it this way, no more sick children will waste their time staring out the window until Can someone come and fix the computer?.
