As indentured servants became fearful, it became more economically viable to purchase slaves. “Free Virginians gradually became familiar with Atlantic resources and the slave trade even as tobacco plantations expanded.” This increase in the number of slaves directly linked to tobacco crops put the South on the path to becoming a nation with a slave system.
