Essay / Industrial Pollution and the Environment - 1127
Industrialization has been a key factor in the development of all current global superpowers. The American economy would never have evolved without the enormous profits generated by the war industry during World War I. However, all these gains are not without costs: industry has led to pollution. While some major world powers have set “ceilings” on their pollution, most have not. Industrial pollution around the world should not be allowed to remain at current levels, due to the damage it causes to both human health and the natural environment. We therefore need stricter caps to protect the environment and the future of humanity. The first risk of industrial pollution lies in oil spills, which are becoming more and more frequent. The United States has begun a move to relax strict oil drilling requirements to promote a healthier market. The problem with this approach is that it fails to take into account that environmental damage can cause far greater economic problems than those that restricting oil drilling will ever cause. The cost of the Alaska pipeline alone has been estimated at $100 million, and of course that's just the pipeline, the profit from this pipeline could well exceed $1 billion if it contained that much oil as estimated by the American geological study of 1923-1925 (USA). 1). Imagine that if this line were refused, the loss of profit could certainly stimulate any growth, which is something the United States is trying to avoid. However, this pipe comes at a cost far greater than any profit it could generate. This 800-mile pipe is destroying 800 miles of now-untouched land. Alaska is home to a variety of wildlife. If this enormous amount of land was destroyed by this pipe, we would see an immediate removal of wildlife, and...... middle of paper ......r. 2014. “DOH Warns Public of Health Risks from Oil Spill Vapors.” » Philippine News Agency, August 9, 2013.
