  • Essay / Review of Literacy Articles - 1803

I have chosen two articles that deal with the habit of reading, but in a different context, one is an academic article and the other is a popular article. The title of the academic article is “Understanding children's reading habits in Singapore”. This article is written by Shaheen Majid and Venus Tan from Nanyang Technological University. It was published in the Journal of Education Media and Library Sciences in 2007. The title of the popular article is "Pleasant Pursuit." This article is written by John Doraisamy and is taken from The Star Online. It was published in 2010 as an education article. These two articles discuss reading habits and reading interest in children. Using these articles, I can study the difference between academic and popular articles, although on the same topic. In this evaluation, certain criteria were used such as the authority of the authors, the aim of the article, the methodology used, the collection and analysis of data, the conclusions of the article, the references used and the readers targets. These criteria will receive different answers between these articles. First of all, we examine the first criterion which is the authority of the authors of the articles. The authors of the academic papers are Shaheen Majid and Venus Tan from Nanyang Technological University. In this article, he mentions that Shaheen Majid is an associate professor and Venus Tan is a graduate student. This was published in the Journal of Education Media and Library Sciences. This means that both authors have the authority to write this article. Indeed, in my opinion, academic journals do not choose or publish articles or research papers written by those who do not have the authority to do so. They suppose to check every word and every middle of the article......to allow readers to find other sources of authors available to produce the journal. Additionally, it guarantees the authenticity and accuracy of the information provided to the reader. Readers not only common readers but also researchers, lecturers, students and many others use it as a guide in related field. Often, popular articles are written by journalists and reporters to produce articles published in their publications. Readers should use wisdom to analyze the information provided, as academic articles and popular articles serve different purposes. As an example of popular articles published to increase sales and attract readers to purchase their publications, we could hardly imagine that the author of popular articles provides a reference in each of his articles. It will therefore be difficult for readers to obtain information from the original writings..
