Enjoyably Appropriate Penguins - Everyone's Favorite - MIllerPenguins are high on the list of animals people love most. It's easy to understand why. The penguins look like little people dressed in their formal black and white costumes. Penguins are simply beautiful animals to watch. The penguin's appearance is important for its survival. As everyone knows, penguins cannot fly. They spend most of their time in the water. Their incredible behavioral abilities help them in their environment. Many people are surprised to learn that penguins live in southern parts of the world where it is not always cold. Penguins are particularly adapted to their habitat. Because they live near water, their diet includes a variety of fish from the world's oceans. Penguins have many predators in the water and on land. The penguin's appearance, habitat, behavior, diet, and predators combine to make this animal one of the most fascinating creatures in the world. Appearance The African penguin is covered in black and white markings. It also has a very sharp black beak and points. -like marks all over their chest (“African Penguin” para. 2). Emperor penguins have orange and yellow feathers on their heads and necks. Emperor penguins can grow up to 130 cm (50 inches). Emperor chicks have silver-gray feathers (“Emperor Penguin” para. 2). Penguins look like submarines and their shape allows them to navigate their way through the water. Penguins have strong bones, which makes swimming easier. Penguins have waterproof feathers while some flying birds like the owl do not have waterproof feathers. Penguins have strong bones while flying birds have hollow bones ("Penguin" p. 4) Behavior When penguins swim at full speed, they jump out of the water. The penguins rock... middle of paper ...... There will undoubtedly be long lines to view the penguins once their exhibit reopens at the St. Louis Zoo in 2015.
