  • Essay / Beloved - 913

Beloved by Toni Morrison is set in rural Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1873. The novel centers on a woman named Sethe, a mother of four children and an escapee from slavery on a Kentucky plantation 18 years ago. She lives with her daughter, Denver, in a dilapidated house at 124 Bluestone, which they share with the ghost of a dead baby, who haunts Sethe by reminding her of past tragedies. Paul D, Sethe's new lover and former Kentucky slave whom Sethe takes in, helps shed light on Sethe's sad life. Also arriving on the doorstep is a mysterious sick young woman who calls herself Beloved. Little by little, Beloved enters the lives of everyone who lives in the haunted house, forcing Sethe to confront her nightmarish memories. Morrison's captivating scene in chapter 27, where the thirty women of the community gather in front of 124 Bluestone to combat the ghost that haunts the house, is carefully constructed to contribute to the work's theme of healing and structure. As Denver awaits transport for its first During a day of work as Bodwin's evening nurse, thirty neighborhood women pray and sing at the edge of the yard after hearing speculation that the ghost of Bodwin's deceased daughter Sethe is said to be the cause of the deterioration of the family. Sethe and Beloved, intrigued by the music, head out to the porch. "Sethe was breaking a piece of ice into pieces. When the music came in through the window, she twisted a cool cloth to put it on Beloved's forehead. She and Sethe exchanged glances and walked toward the window" (Morrison 261). As Bodwin approaches in a cart with his horses to collect Denver, Sethe is triggered by a flashback to when the schoolteacher and the slave catcher came for her children 18 years ago. Running towards the cart, Sethe lets go of Beloved's hand and runs towards the crowd using the ice pick as her hand attachment to protect her Beloved. “He comes to her garden and he comes for the best that she has…And if she thinks anything, it’s no” (Morrison 262). The thirty community women Sethe was running towards stop her and Beloved neglected on the porch disappears alone. "Sethe runs from her, runs, and she feels the emptiness in the hand that Sethe holds. Now she runs into the faces of the people there, joins them and leaves Beloved behind..
