    First, during early childhood, the basic trust versus distrust occurs and this goes hand in hand with the needs met by parents and the basic harm that happens if they are not satisfied. If more trust is built, the virtue of hope is formed, which helps us to hope that the future will go well. Between the ages of one and three, we experience autonomy rather than shame and doubt. A child is capable of doing things on his own and parents need to encourage him, otherwise he may feel shame or doubt about his behavior. If more autonomy develops, the virtue of will, which gives us the will to make decisions without feeling shame or doubt. The third stage, initiative versus guilt, occurs between the ages of four and five. A child is able to initiate ideas, actions and plan future events. If parents ridicule the child, which is a form of fundamental evil, the child will feel guilty. If parents encourage their child, it helps us understand that our ideas and actions have a purpose. The confusion between identity and role is the fourth stage. Between the ages of 12 and 20, we either discover who we are or we experience an identity crisis because we don't feel comfortable in our own body.
