  • Essay / The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao: A Summary

In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Junot Diaz tells the story of a Dominican immigrant family, focusing primarily on the lives of Oscar de León, a descendant of the diaspora who directly experienced the horrors of the Trujillo regime in the mid-20th century. Leon's family can't seem to escape fukú, the seemingly eternal curse that has plagued the New World for centuries. In order to tell Oscar's story, Diaz uses postmodern narrative to weave a story that is not only emotionally powerful, but more importantly as a tool to depict the unique and nuanced perspectives of a generation of young people whose identities are both divergent from the culture of their parents. , while being deeply rooted in its ideals and its essential history. Postmodern narratives are those that challenge the conventions of traditional storytelling as a means of representing reality. Diaz uses postmodern narrative primarily through the style of his narration. Through the lens of Yunior, he presents a narrative not necessarily trustworthy and often openly aware of its lack of omniscience. Additionally, his story does not unfold in a linear fashion. Diaz tells Oscar's story and intermittently takes time to flesh out the lives of Lola, Belicia, and Abelard, with which the details of their lives are all intertwined. One of the greatest implications of the horrors of the Trujillo regime is the diaspora that followed his fall. The generation that includes Oscar, Lola, and Yunior is the first to have grown up among the diasporic communities of North America, particularly in Paterson, New Jersey. Thanks to their parents, originally from the Dominican Republic, the children are still anchored in their own Dominican culture...... middle of paper ......ar Wao."
