On June 6, 1952, Harvey Fierstein, the American actor and playwright, was born to Jacqueline Harriet and Irving Fierstein of Brooklyn, New York. Harvey Fierstein's on-screen success has manifested itself in some highly acclaimed films: "Mulan," "Independence Day" and "Mrs. Doubtfire," to name a few. These movie lists have attracted the attention of many, but his initial fame lay in his playwriting ability. The playwright-turned-actor began his writing career in high school, where he enrolled in creative writing. that his openness about being gay was no secret. He participated in many drag events growing up. These events eventually pushed him to find success on Broadway and become an activist for the gay population. Additionally, some of his plays are written about drag queens and others about homosexuality. Mr. Fierstein grew up in a time when being gay was a very difficult lifestyle to talk about openly. The support group of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, or better known as LGBT, supported the mass movement around the world. Mr. Fierstein wanted to show the world that it is okay to be yourself and that the LGBT community will no longer accept intolerance. His plays focus on the difficulties faced by the oppressed and tyrants. In his play “On Tidy Endings,” a lover and his ex-wife come together to sign documents and tie up loose ends after a man’s death. It was during the conception of this coin that most Americans declared that being homosexual was a crime against God. These actions are the fruit of the belief that God created man for woman and woman for man. I believe Mr. Fierstein's theme is to show people that same-sex marriage is no different from others, but it is the judgment of those who are not submissive... middle of paper...... homosexuality was felt around the world in the 1970s and 1980s. The period in which this piece was written was a time of great dissonance for the LGBT movement. The fact that Harvey Fierstein was so bold and public with his own lifestyle was truly admirable and courageous. Fierstein shows us that ignorance can destroy a life because of what is unknown.
