Throughout the 1950s, an estimated annual figure ranging from 200,000 to 1.2 illegal abortions took place. These women were attempting to abort their pregnancies, whether or not the procedure was legal in the states in which they resided. Women who seek illegal abortions face serious and life-threatening side effects, including death. They are dangerous because the person performing the abortion usually does not have the professional training or knowledge to ensure the safety of the patient. Illegal abortions take place in environments with limited medical and safety standards (The Impact of Illegal Abortions, 2014). After one of the most important court cases in our nation's history, Roe v. Wade, women began to benefit from the legalization of this procedure. Roe, a single pregnant woman from Texas, challenged her state's abortion laws. Texas laws did not allow women to abort their pregnancies unless the procedure could potentially save the woman's life. As a result, the court ruled that women could legally obtain an abortion during the first trimester of their pregnancy (Pichler, 2006). Prior to this landmark court case, each year, at least 5,000 women died from illegal abortions (The Impact of Illegal Abortions, 2014). After abortion was legalized, it became much safer. For example, procedures take place in well-equipped clinics and hospitals; the abortion mortality rate has declined significantly to 0.6 per 100,000 procedures. Although the outcome of this trial had a positive impact on women in our country, this policy should go further. American women would live in a much safer society if legislation with pro-choice elements were used to prevent illegal abortions. As a result, women would not risk their lives by availing the procedure from unreliable sources. As a result, fewer women would die from abortion because they would receive the appropriate medical care they need. Not only would a liberal national abortion law reduce the rate of illegal abortions, it would also prevent poverty. Women living below the poverty line should not be expected to take care of a child because they are already struggling to survive alone. This policy must be implemented as quickly as possible in order to give women in our country the rights they deserve..
