Gordon uses descriptive details such as "Your cheek grew pale and you kissed" (5) showing that he knew the end was near. The real question that mood can help answer in this poem is: is it love or lust that these partners feel? Lust makes our relationship one-sided because no two people will feel the same way. The excitement of an affair or short relationship ending. Lust is temporary rather than eternal. When that feeling ends, the fall is harder because you were so high and then the reality hits you again that it's not possible to do it anymore. One person usually ends up with a lot more grief than another. Throughout this poem, Gordon mentions, “They know not that I knew thee, they who knew thee too well” (21-22).
