The 1830s were a time of serious religious conflict. Many people, including authors, had different opinions on how to find true spirituality. Ultimately, American authors created transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a philosophical and literary movement that seeks individual truth through spiritual reflection, total solitude, and a deep connection with nature. Because this has been established by authors, many of them have written different articles reflecting and using the beliefs of Transcendentalism. Ralph Waldo Emerson was considered the father of transcendentalism. He wrote many influential pieces that follow and emphasize key transcendental beliefs. The main beliefs include the oversoul, nature and the senses. In addition to this, there are minor beliefs and general ways of life. These beliefs were included in Transcendental plays as a general way to share belief and create movement. Due to the use of nature, senses, and the oversoul as three fundamental transcendental beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Nature" successfully explains the fundamental principles of transcendentalism. “Nature” by Ralph Waldo Emerson effectively uses the oversoul as a transcendental thought. belief to explain the relationship between humanity, nature and God. The over-soul or divine soul is the soul that resides in everyone or everything. The transcendentalist believes that all of life and the parts of life that comprise it are connected to infinite capacity. Transcendentalists often connect man with nature and nature with God. Emerson captures this concept when he says, “Standing on the bare ground, with head bathed by the glad air and lifted up into infinite space” (Emerson 3). Overall, these connections and relationships are important because it is on them that transcendentalism depends. Without the support of these beliefs, Emerson would not be able to successfully write about his concepts about individual truths due to the lack of support.
