What affects self-esteem?According to the Oxford Dictionary, self-esteem is confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect (oxoforddictiornar.com). There are some truly scandalous statistics like 75% of girls/boys with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities like cutting, bullying, smoking, drinking, or having an eating disorder. This compares to 25 percent of girls/boys with high self-esteem (dosomething.org). There are factors that negatively affect our self-esteem, some of them being stereotypes, our own minds, bullying, but also factors that affect in a positive way, such as family. Stereotypes are the factor that affects us most negatively. estimated. As humans, we tend to want to fit in, and to fit in we have to live and look according to society's standards. Many of these standards are set by famous people, magazines, television and many other media outlets. Some of these standards are like having expensive cars. jewelry, handbags, makeup, cell phones. what happens when you can't afford these things? You start to feel bad because they have more money than you. Then you start to be jealous of them and want what they have. The norms of this society are not only physical, they are also physical and one of them is being overweight. It affects him in different ways, but one of the biggest is acceptance. In today's societies, an overweight girl is ugly. Why is she ugly? Because these days there is a standard for a pretty girl and what is that standard?
