One of the most common reasons is being considered weak. Some soldiers believe that if they show signs of weakness, they will be seen as a failure for their country or the military. Andrew Pomerantz, chief of mental health services at the VA, sheds light on this issue: "Many people simply fear being exposed as weak, which certainly impacts the military culture of the force, or fear in reality of retaliation and punishment if they express their force. psychological distress” (Aronson, 2014). In addition to being considered incapacitated, soldiers who disclose symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and seek treatment are at increased risk of being forced to end their mission.
