Essay / Hacking Sweeps the Nation - 2071
“We can't defend ourselves with a gun…but we can do it with their cars, their homes, their bars, their brothels and everything else in their possession. It won't be difficult; we all know who they are and where they are. Quoted from an anonymous member. (Schiller, A.6.) Computer hacking began in the 1950s with an individual seeking personal gain; like free phone calls for example. Since then, the perception of hackers has become very negative. Hacking has evolved over time, with many modern hackers following their own set of values that they view as arguably positive motivations. In the beginning, many hackers were individuals, seeking their own personal gains. The hacking students were able to expand the computers and make them play music and video games. In 1971, programmer John Draper discovered that a small whistle provided in a box of Captain Crunch cereal had the same frequency that the telephone company used to send calls. His discoveries allowed him to make free telephone calls anywhere in the world. (Clemmit, 767) In the early 1980s, young hackers became professionals at hacking computer networks, which sparked an uproar of cybercrime incidents in the 1990s. In the 1990s and 2000s, hackers Hackers began to really be recognized as a threat by hacking many federal government and large business websites. This has sparked much controversy over what approach should be taken to stopping computer crimes. In the 2000s, hackers managed to make a name for themselves and became a major attraction among the public. They managed to shut down a nuclear power plant in Ohio by releasing a worm that disabled important safety systems. (Clemmit, 767)Over time, the number of cyber threats has increased.
