  • Essay / What They Did Wrong: Medical Malpractice

What is malpractice? The definition given is improper, illegal, or negligent professional activity or treatment, especially by a physician, lawyer, or public official. These cases are happening more all over the state than they should be due to the human era. People entrusted to doctors are abandoned and find themselves disfigured or even killed. These cases force people to question their surgeons as well as the nurses who accompany them. In the case listed here, Dr. Loren J. Borud was scheduled to operate on Mr. Michael Hicks early on a Friday morning. The surgery consisted of liposuction and a scar repair procedure. Dr. Loren informed the patient that the procedure would take approximately ninety minutes, but it ended up lasting over seven hours due to the fact that Dr. Loren kept falling asleep during M's operation. .Hick! Seven hours is way too long to be placed under anesthesia for something as simple as liposuction. The longer a patient remains under anesthesia, the more likely they are to be at risk and complications may arise during or even after surgery. Michael Hicks underwent the operation without complications during the operation, but after the operation many complications arose. Mr. Hicks suffered complications after the procedure and sued Dr. Borud, the hospital, five other doctors and two nurses. The matter was not settled in court, but was settled on confidential terms. Mr. Hicks deserves compensation for the time lost as well as the misconduct committed by the hospital and medical staff on behalf of his case during his proceedings. Mr. Hicks expected to wake up okay and his fear was corrected in about ninety minutes, not seven hours, in addition to having complications...... middle paper...... hands, but he did not receive it. This has been noticed more than once by a number of people. In conclusion, this story, along with many others, should be a lesson in why we, as patients, should research our doctor's background intensively before choosing to be under their care. If we are referred to a doctor by another doctor, it is acceptable to continue to investigate their history with previous patients. It is our body and our choice on who we allow to perform surgery or any other procedure at any time. If we feel uncomfortable at any time and for any reason, we have the right to refuse care from any doctor. Many people don't realize this and it's a sad reality. I urge everyone to do their homework on their doctor before choosing one. Look at their educational background, their accreditations, their years in the field as well as any lawsuits or complaints filed. These Steps Will Help Weed Out Negligent Doctors.
