After being presented to the scaffold, Hester is taken back to her cell with a scarlet letter "A" and Pearl. As the years go by, Hester finds that no one really cares about what she did, so she begins to help people and try to become a better person. After about seven years, we are told that Hester helps the people of the lower classes by sewing them clothes and giving them food. We are also told that she helps the sick and heals them. This shows how her character develops and is one of the first times we see the "A" change meaning from adulterous to capable, meaning she has done so much to help him, it is as if his sentence has almost disappeared. Besides being a good person and helping the sick, she also has a very strong heart. Hester is strong, after doing what she does, she doesn't allow that to stop her. She continues to do what she does best, sew, and shows everyone that even though she is named this person of sin, she can still stand up to do good. When Hester learned she might lose Pearl, it was like a switch flipped inside her and she became a super mom or something, she taught Pearl what she needed to know and she still managed to help people.
